Downham Town 1 Mildenhall Town 2
There was a definite feeling of deja vu about this game as Downham again dominated and looked by far the better team in the first half. Despite Downham using the wide men more than going down the centre, they could easily have been 2-0 up after 20 minutes if it hadn't been for the Mildenhall keeper and som of the shots had had a little more power to them. However, as the game progressed and Downham didn't make the most of their chances, Mildenhall started to grow into the game. Infact, if it wasn't for a brilliant save from Congreve, who is now the third keeper to play for Downham this season, it could have been Mildenhall going in ahead at the break. However, the first half finished with both teams failing to score and Downham were probably the team who could feel most aggrieved by not finishing their chances.
The second half saw Mildenhall have a lot more of the ball, but their best chances seemed to be made from mistakes by the Downham defence. For Downham Charlie Royle had the best chance in the opening encounters but a good save by the Hall keeper denied him.
There was then a moment of controversy when a foul on the edge of the box on Owen McQuaid where he was clear through saw Downham awarded a free kick, but the offending player went unpunished. There could be an argument that he could have been given a straight red. It was minimally a yellow, and as he had already received one, he was very lucky to stay on the pitch. Instead it was Downham who found themselves reduced to 10 for the final 20 minutes. An injury when they had made their substitution (they only had one yesterday) led to them having to close the game out with a player fewer than Mildenhall.
However, it was Downham who finally got a breakthrough with 9 minutes remaining. They were awarded a free kick from a tight angle. Mildenhall expected a cross to come in but Gagyi made the right decision to take a shot that fooled the keeper and it looked like we might finally see a win. It was not to be though. Two late goals one on 87 minutes and one in stoppage time saw Mildenhall go home with the points.
