On Saturday we went to see Italy take on Ireland at Craven Cottage as a World Cup warm-up game. It was a n experimental Italian team and a spirited performance by the Irish. Italy also had a couple of hard knocks in the game, with captain on the night, Montolivio being carried off with a broken leg after 15 minutes. Giuseppe Rossi, who was brilliant for most of the season at Fiorentina before picking up an injury was also given a chance, but ultimately he wasn't fit enough and hasn't made the cut for the final squad on the back of Saturday's performance. David Forde was in good form in the Irish goals and saved early on from a good shot from Claudio Marchisio, but the first real chance came on 21 minutes when Owen Pilkington curled in a free kick, which Salvo Sirigu did well to save. Darmian of Torino who was making his debut for the national team came close a minute later, but it was Ireland who were looking the most convincing going forward and Sirigu was at full stre

It was a great result for the Stars who went 10 points clear at the top of the Elite League and Nicklas Porsing, Robert Lambert and Lewis Kerr were on impressive form for the Stars, but the night will probably be remembered for some other reasons. In race 9, which was ironically sponsored by an ambulance company Dsrren Mallett crashed with James Sarjeant of the Bees and both of the riders were taken to hospital. When the race restarted after about an hour Jason Garrity of the Bees crashed his bike into the concrete and the bike went flying over the fence. Fortunately he wasn't hurt though and the race continued. Nevertheless, the Stars totally dominated the Bees, who were also on a fine run of form especially on the road. They won a series of matches 5-1 and if it wasn't for the Bees Hans Andersen who won one match when wearing the double points helmet and gave the Stars a run for their money in other heats the margin could have been even greater.
