 Tuesday night saw our second trip to the Abbey in three days and also saw another 1-0 against opposition who were expected to beat the Us, when Millwall from the Championship were the visitors. Both teams were playing a mix of seasoned first teamers and fringe players, but it was Cambridge who for most of the game looked like they were from the higher league. Millwall had the (pardon the pun) lion's share of the shots and possession, but their passing lacked the accuracy of Cambridge and Shilow Tracey was causing Millwall some problems at the back, although a lot of the time the Us' midfield's passing was often snuffed out before Ironside or Janneh could do much with it. The deadlock was finally ended just before the hour mark when Liam O'Neil scored to put the Us in the lead. It has been suggested that like Aston villa's rampant lion the lion used by Millwall was because of their Scottish origins. However, their original nickname was 'the Dockers' and they didn't become the Lions until 1900. In this year they certainly were as fearsome as lions, as they reached the semi final of the FA Cup and won some notable victories on the way. They also reached the semi finals in 1903 and 1937 and reached the final in 2004. So the lion nickname came from the cup run of 1900, as they wanted to be seen as fearsome, and also because of the Boer War everything African was in vogue at the time.
