Peterborough United 1 Carlisle United 3

In this Good Friday coming together, I don't think that anybody would have expected this result and I am sure that a fair few accas were ruined with this result.

Posh went into the game in good form and despite the recent loss to runaway leaders, Portsmouth that I recently went to have been on good form. They still look good for the play-offs and have a Wembley final to look forward to next week, but nobody would have expected a loss, never mind and emphatic loss to bottom of the league Carlisle.

I think that part of the problem was that Wembley final, as Posh didn't really look like they wanted to put a tackle in and the starting 11 yesterday probably expect to be the starting 11 next week. This was coupled with Poku and Mason-Clark uncharacteristically looking off form and being unable to get the ball to Malik Mothersille, who cut a lonely figure up front for the Posh. That said, nothing should be taken away from a great performance by the visitors who battled for everything and wanted every ball. They played this game as if it were there own cup final.

During the opening 20 minutes both teams seemed a little cagey, but it was Carlisle who struck first through Jon James Alexander Mellish (Yeah - I am not sure why he has to use three first names either!) who broke down the Posh defence on 27 minutes. I thought that the Posh defence at this point looked there for the taking as Josh Knight in particular didn't seem to know where he was playing and seemed to be all over the pitch rather than centre half, although to be fair later in the game he was converted to a right wing back. Nevertheless, as the teams went in at the break at 1-0, there was some hope that Posh would get the kick up the arse they deserved and come out firing.

Whatever Fergie said to his charges at half time didn't work though, as shortly after the break and on 49 minutes, Mellish beat Jed Steer from distance with a wonderful strike for his and Carlisle's second goal. Peterborough then brought on three new players to try and change their fortunes, but the changes led to confusion in the first instance and on 58 minutes Mellish got a third goal to add to his 3 first names and looked to have put the game beyond Posh.

The third Carlisle goal saw Posh finally wake up though and Joel Randall stabbed one home pretty much straight after the 3rd Carlisle goal to set up what we hoped would be a grandstand finish. Posh made more changes but for the most part Carlisle stood strong. Jonson Clarke-Harris who was introduced in response to the second Carlisle goal caused some problems up front and came close to scoring twice, including hitting the bar once. However, despite an onslaught for the last 30 minutes when they were already three down, Posh only managed to get two shots on target, which tells you that Carlisle were worthy winners.
