King's Lynn Town 2 Peterborough Sports 1

I had planned to be at Cambridge v Morecambe on Saturday, but the wind had damaged the roof at the Abbey and the game was postponed. Instead I travelled to King's Lynn for a tasty looking Derby in the National League North between Lynn and Peterborough Sports. As well as it being a local Derby it also offered Lynn a chance to go top of the league and help ensure an instant return to the National League Premier. For Sports playing at the highest level they have ever been it was a chance to really cement a place in the league for next season.

It started off looking like Lynn were going to dominate and that a big win was on the cards. Sports maybe assumed that the game was going to be called off, as it didn't look like they were prepared at the start. The first quick break of the game saw an error at the back give Lynn the lead through Aaron Jones after just 2 minutes. If Sports expected a let up, it wasn't about to happen. The next attack saw Lynn double their lead in as many minutes as Aaron Cosgrove got on the end of a Mike Clunan shot. The noise from the Lynn fans could have led to the roof being blown off the stand here though, but it was to be short-lived.

Lynn carried on pushing for even more goals, but the defence who had not been troubled too much were also caught napping and a forced error led to a Tyler Denton own goal on 16 minutes, which really threw Sports a lifeline.

The rest of the second half saw Lynn continue to press for more goals, but the Sports defence were starting to put in a more dogged performance  and the midfield were chipping in with a few crunching tackles too. Nathan Fox was particularly determined given the stick he was getting as an ex-Lynn player. The half ended 2-1 to the home team, but it really could have been a lot worse for the visitors.

The second half was a bit of a disappointment after a pulsing first half. Sport settled into a rhythm where they dealt with Lynn and Lynn were happy to protect their lead. This was a tactically well managed game by the Linnets, but the first half was a much better spectacle than the second.
