Uzbekistan Super League 2021

One of the few benefits of being stuck at home for so long is that you can often put on an extra screen while you work and surreptitiously watch a bit of football. Also with unfortunately not being able to get to any football, the weekends need to be filled with something. During the first lockdown there were at one point only 3 leagues operating; Belarus, Tajikistan and Taiwan. Now this year in yet another lockdown all leagues are operating, and we are now at that sweet spot where pretty much most countries are playing football.

Last year the Belarus and Tajikistan leagues were shown on MyCujoo. I’m looking forward to the Tajik league again, but in the meantime they’re showing the Uzbekistan league, which has kick off times and midweek games that are conducive to watching with one eye during the weekday.

I saw a few of the opening matches last week and they were very entertaining. The first game between AGMK and Lokomotiv Tashkent, which AGMK won 2-1 was especially entertaining. The wins for Bunyodkor and Surkhon weren’t bad either and in these times it’s nice to see decent crowds with a decent atmosphere.

Last year, I did a special report on the Tajikistan League for the Russian Non-League Football website, and although I doubt that I’ll be asked for the Uzbekistan league this year, I thought that it might be interesting to look at the 14 different teams and some of their qualities and shortcomings. Pakhtakor who ran away with the league last year look like the ones to beat and although traditionally strong Lokomotiv look like they are going to struggle, so it’ll be interesting to see who can mount a sustained challenge.
