Mash'al Mubarek - Uzbekistan Super League 2021
Mash'al are one of the few teams that I had seen ahead of this season, although they didn't seem that great and have got off to a shaky start again this season with one win and two losses.
The club started in the fine year of 1982. Up until independence they played in the Uzbekistan Soviet League. In 1992 with independence secured they started off in the first division before gaining promotion in 1994. Their highest finish the club has secured is 2nd in 2005 - a season that saw Shurat Mirkholdirshoev score 20 goals. A job that he had been trusted with after finishing the top scorer in the league the previous season for Navbahor. Unfortunately Pakhtakor pipped them to the championship.
The team are usually a mid table outfit and that is probably where their aspirations lie this season. They were relegated in 2012 and were promoted in 2013 and since then have been safe, but not really done anything of note. Mubarak is a city well-known for oil and gas, but unlike some of the other Uzbeki clubs, they don't seem to have attracted any sugar daddies of note at any time in their history.
Player to watch: Nazhmiddin Normurodov is a centre back in his second season at Mash'al after previously playing for Nasaf Qarshi and Surkhon. At 25 he is one of Mash'al's better players and can also play in Midfield if necessary.
Star signing: Mash'al have a number of young forwards so it will be hoped that 28 year old Khomoyun Mutazoev will give them something up front. He started his career at Mash'al, but returns after successful spells at Nasaf Qarshi and Bunyodkor.
Foreign Legion: I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that both Nigeria and this part of Uzbekistan are well-known for oil, but Mash'al have four foreigners who are all Nigerian. In his second season and playing in midfield is Ifeanyi ifeanyi . Joining him in midfield are fellow Nigerians Michael Ibe and Ukeme Williams. Ibe signed from Uzbek side Andijon and Williams came from Akwa United. All 3 of them have played at Akwa in the past. The final Nigerian in the squad is forward, Samuel Chigozie Ononiwu. The 24 year old signed from Mauritius side Bolton City and has played most of his career in Mauritius at Bolton City and LC Sylvester
