Wisbech Town 5 Gresley Rovers 1

Despite being just 10 miles away, I went on the convoluted trip of a train to King's Lynn and then a bus to Wisbech in order to get to the game on Saturday. I had been meaning to go to the Fenland Stadium since it opened 10 years ago, but this was the first time I actually mad it.

After some light refreshments in town, we made our way up yet another Lynn Road to get to what was a pretty nice little ground.

Neither team had really been setting the league alight this season with Wisbech having won their first game of the season the week before when they put four past Sleaford.

I decided to stand with the away fans, just out of a bit of Midlands solidarity and that I used to enjoy the Bass Charity Shield at Gresley back in the 80s. It seemed particularly fitting after the passing of Gary Shaw, who I saw play for Villa at their ground.

As a few games have already been this season, this was a game of two halves. Gresley looked like they had the taking of Wisbech in the first half and could have easily been a few goals up. However, they didn't break through until just before halftime and that was from an own goal.

I was expecting a deluge of goals in the second half and that's what we got, but not in the goal that I expected to see them. Whatever the Wisbech manager said to them at half time, it had the desired effect. Amir Ward pulled one back early with a goal on 48 minutes and Elliot Foster gave the Fenmen the lead for the first time shortly after.

Gresley didn't capitulate straightaway, but when they did it was fairly spectacular way to capitulate. Sam Ward made it 3-1 on 76 before Ward got his second and Wisbech's fourth and Krister Zaluzinskis came on to get a goal and make it 5-1 with 2 minutes left. There was still time for Gresley's Jacob Sturgess to pick up two yellow cards in stoppage time and really confound Gresley's miserable afternoon. At least for them the sun was shining even though thunderstorms had been forecast.
