Cambridge United 2 Forest Green Rovers 0

What an end to the season. Before April it looked like Cambridge were destined for relegation, a good run of games meant that they gave themselves a chance of staying up, but a defeat in midweek to Burton meant that Sunday saw them needing to beat Forest Green and that neither MK Dons or Morecambe could get a result. Forest Green who had already finished bottom meant Cambridge were hopeful for the win, but the other permutations made it look like a difficult task. Added to that you never know which version of Cambridge is going to turn up.

Fortunately, it was the good Cambridge that took to the pitch. Harrison Dunk, who as a defender doesn't have a massive reputation for scoring seems to keep on getting goals and he managed to get the ball over the line in a bit of a scramble on 25 minutes.

It was 2 before halftime when Sam Smith doubled the lead with a fantastic strike. Before the ball went in it looked so much like it was going to go over that he looked away in disappointment, only for the ball to nestle into the top corner.

The second half saw both teams out on their feet and Cambridge with enough to keep FGR at bay and Rovers looking dejected as they looked at another defeat. Elsewhere, Exeter were beating Morecambe, but 0-0 between Burton and MK meant we had to wait for the news there. It stayed 0-0 and despite the clubs warnings everyone was on the pitch and the club even opened the gates.

What an end to the season!
