Port Vale 0 Cambridge United 2
It's a long trip to Stoke-on-Trent and one that I'd been swayed to taking when I thought that there was a train strike on this day, which in the end there wasn't, but I am still glad we went. If I hadn't been at the match, I would have presumed it was an April Fool's Day prank when I saw the result. Cambridge scoring a goal never mind two is a rare enough occurrence, so getting two and winning away is not aomething anybody would have expected before the game.
I also have to say that the Tommy Cheadle Social Club with £3 a pint Marston's and old school fanzine the Port Vale Beano for sale felt like a bit of a throwback and as I got an old pound coin as part of my change, it really did take me back.
The first half was the turgid affair that we all expected it to be, with Port Vale with not much to play for and Cambridge being abject for most of the season. However, it was Cambridge who had the better chances and Shilow Tracey and Jack Lankester both came close for the Us.
Both teams clearly got a kick up the backside at half time. However, it was Port Vale who came close first when Will Mannion made a fine same from Funso Ojo. A few minutes later though Cambridge had the lead when Sam Smith bundled the ball into the next to give the visitors the lead. It was clearly the tonic that the out of sorts striker needed though and he looked transformed by the goal.
Four minutes after Smith giving the Us the lead a Conor McGrandles cross was met by Lloyd Jones, who fired home with a header to give the us a two goal lead. In all honesty, it could have a nd should have been more, but let's hope that they have left some in the tank for the Good Friday showdown with Fleetwood. A win there and perhaps, just perhaps the Us will be able to turn things around.
The Us take the ball in the corner to run down the clock. Most Vale fans had already vacated the stadium.
