Cambridge United 2 Fleetwood Town 1

After beating Port Vale away last Saturday, Cambridge continued with their good form by beating Fleetwood on Good Friday. They made it 7 out of 9 points on Monday when they got a draw with a stoppage time equaliser from Sam Smith. The Us have now given themselves a fighting chance when it had appeared that they were dead and buried.

The Fleetwood game got off to a good start when Jack Lankester scored a beauty on 3 minutes. For the rest of the half the teams seemed to be fairly equally balanced. Fleetwood had more of the possession but Cambridge had the better chances. The better chances usually coming from set pieces, which Cambridge looked dangerous from and Fleetwood didn't seem adverse to giving away. That said it was with some relief that we went into the break with the Us still in the lead. I was still expecting that the Cod Army would fight back after Broony had shoved a rocket up them at half time, but fortunately it didn't really happen until it was too late.

The ill-discipline of the visitors spilled over into the second half and Cambridge looked like capitalising. In fact it was a bit of surprise that they ended with 11 players. The Us' second goal came on 57 minutes and was a spot kick from Sam Smith.

Junior Quitirna pulled one back for Fleetwood with 7 minutes remaining, but fortunately Cambridge held on to grab a very useful three points.

As I already said they then followed this up with a handy draw against play-off hopefuls Bolton. On Saturday what was already going to be a bad tempered derby between Cambridge and Posh looks like it could be crucial. Cambridge need points for survival and Posh need points to cement their place in the play-offs.
