The Posh and The Pirates
Yesterday saw the start of the season for the league excluding the Premier league and step 5 and 6 of non-league football. Ely were away, so I went to London Road to see Peterborough take on Bristol Rovers.
Last season was a bit of a nightmare for Peterborough with a managerial merry go round and relegation from the Championship looking almost certain as early as Christmas. Posh were relegated back to League 1, but they have managed to keep star players George Boyd and Aaron McLean and added some signings that make the club look stronger than when they played in the Championship. Also with Gary Johnson taking over as the manager they have a very experienced and able leader.
That said, it was hard to predict before kick off what the score would be with Bristol Rovers being one of the dark horses of the division. From the start it looked like Bristol Rovers were going to try and contain Peterborough and hit them on the break. The first 20 minutes was quite a turgid affair, but after that Peterborough had a few chances and if the linesman hadn't been so flag happy every time Mendez-Laing went forward Peterborough may have made the break through before half time. On the other hand Bristol Rovers also created a few chances and Kuffour came close on a couple of occassions.
Whatever Johnson said to the players at half time seemed to work though, as they came out firing on all cylinders and on 58 minutes George Boyd fired Posh ahead after a beautiful shot found its way into the corner of the Bristol Rovers' net. It was then Aaron McLean's turn to push forward and he came close on a couple of occassions before hitting the post and then on 73 minutes finally buring the ball in the Rovers' net. By now it could have been a cricket score for Peterborough, but they had to wait until 88 minutes when Posh new boy Grant McCann, who has 'freekick specialist' on his CV curved the ball around the Rovers' wall to make it Peterborough 3 Bristol Rovers 0
