No work and lots of fun. Ely v Histon reserves
Last night Ely took on Histon reserves in a game that was always going to be hard to predict. Mor often than not Histon put out a strong team against Ely, as it being a local game it invaribly goes ahead on Tuesday night. But things have changed dramatically at Histon and the old chairman of Histon, who was at the game last night, must be wondering where it all went wrong. Not that the future is that rosy at Ely either, but at least the team are playing well and they came into this game off a 2-0 win away at Harwich and Histon had gone down 6-1 at Dereham.
That said I wasn't that optimistic, as my last day had started with me hearing that O'Neill had quit Villa and then progressed to various authors and freelancers throwing huge spanners in the works just before I went on holiday.
Anyway, I didn't need to worry. The Histon team looked good enough, but very young, judging by the look of them they were probably having to stay up past their bed time. Ely had an effective enough looking team, but I did wonder about dropping Kentoth Gray and moving Ben Lawrence to left back. Ely were also without Robbie MAson, who was on holiday and Tony Beck who may or may not have had a bit of a falling out with Dennis Lightning at the Stowmarket game. Hopefully, I'm wrong about that, but they did have a pretty long discussion after he was substituted.
In the game itself Ely had a lot of the early pressure, but Jake Twinn put the visitors ahead on around the 10 minute mark. A couple of minutes later Tony Brown made the most of a mix up in the Histon box to put the Robins on equal terms. This more or less set the scene for the whole match, as Histon didn't get forward very often, but when they did they looked like scoring, while Ely got forward a lot, but only seemed like capitalising from defensive mix ups.
Justice was done on 35 minutes when Tony Brown's central defensive partner Simon Warren put Ely ahead, again when the box was packed with bodies. The final shot was definitely Wazzer's but it may have taken a deflection off a Histon defender.
On the stroke of half time Issy Smith scored what was the goal of the game with Histon's second shot as he slipped through the Ely defence to put the ball under Pacey from distance. Ironically, from the kick off after the goal Histon went forward again and could have made it 3-2, but fortunately the shot went wide to keep the result 2-2 at half time.
Ely came out firing in the second half and Andy Pettit put Ely ahead in the first minute after another incident of comedy defending where Histon failed to clear 4 shots before Pettit put it over the line. On 65 minutes Pettit wrapped up the game for the Robins after Mark Johnstone was fouled in the box. Mark Johnstone was probably the player of the match, but like a lot of the Ely players he needs to keep his trap shut.
Once Ely had gone 4-2 up there was no way back for Histon and Ely shut up shot by bringing on more defensively minded players. So a good start to the holiday and just for good measure I won a bottle of wine in the raffle
