Hitchin Town 1 Leiston 2

 This was my first FA Cup game of the season as Hitchin welcomed Leiston to Top Fields in what looked like the best fixture of the weekend that I could get to. Although, I do have to admit the real highlight was seeing Villa beat Spurs in a Spurs pub in the early kick off ahead of us going to the ground.

The game started with Hitchin on the attack and they were all over Leiston for the first 10 minutes. However, as the half progressed Leiston looked the most likely to take the lead and on 28 minutes the visitors took the lead from a well worked cross that Adam Mills struck home. 

This seemed to give Leiston the impetus and Adam Marriot (remember him) and Seb Dunbar gave Hitchin a few things to think about before the two teams went in at the break with Leiston having a one goal advantage.

The second half started quite slowly with both teams looking a little laboured, but Hitchin seemed to be the most likely to score and so it was. Blue Joy (yes that's his name) scored from close range to make it 1-1.

At this poit it was anybody's game, but in all honesty it looked to be heading for a draw, which led to the usual head scratching that accompanies the early qualifying rounds of the cup. Was it heading for a replay; extra time or straight to penalties? It would have been a replay in Leiston, but they had other ideas. On 92 minutes Eddie Jackson scored with a diving header to to give Leiston the win and send their small travelling group of fans delirious.

I have to say I'm getting a bit sick of how important the premiership and the Champions League have become at the detrement to everything else. We've had the Arsenal kids in the League Cupfor years and now it appears that the FA Cup doesn't matter to anyone who has the slightest chance of being relegated or getting promoted or into Europe aren't interested. This week we also ad Villa and Spurs treating the UEFA Cup with disdain. Therefore, it comes as a bit of a surprise that the clubs in the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup take it so seriously. It isn't across the board in all non league competitions, as several clubs field weaker sides even for trophy games. In the Cambrdgeshire Invitation Cup first we had the Shelford epic and then a hard fought game at Soham. Meanhile CRC who are in the final and have been taking the competition seriously, and on Tuesday Ely play Cambridge City, who are regular winers of the competition.

The History of Hamburg SV

This week I bought the retro Hamburg SV shirt (the blue one pictured above), which was perhaps a bit of a strange purchase as they are in the same group as Villa in the UEFA Cup, but it's a good shirt and they seem like a decent bunch, although i might not be saying that next month. The 'Bundesliga Dinosaurs' are the only club to have played in every season of the Bundesliga since its inception in 1963. They were formed as an athletics club in 1887 when Der Hohenfelder and Wandsbek Marienthaler came together to form Sports club Germania, they started playing football in 1891 after having it introduced to them by some Englishmen. After World War I Sports Club Germania, Hamburg FC and FC Falke found themselves in a weakened position and decided to get together and form Hamburg SV. Coventry City Shirt History

Next Saturday we are off to London Road again, this time Posh are taking on one of my least favourite teams of all time; Coventry City, who were strangely the first team I saw playing against Stoke at the old Victoria Ground in 1983. Anyway, it's not looking good for the Sky Blues this season, as they currently sit at the bottom of the Championship and all doesn't seem well at the club, it hasn't always been like this though. Coventry were formed as Singers after the factory that made bicycles in the City in 1883. Their original kit was thought to be pink like the colours of the factory, there is also evidence that the Sky Blues wore sky blue in this period too, but that may have been a change shirt. One of the earliest shirts on record was a number that mixed both blue and pink, which dates back to 1889.
