Downham Town 3 Brantham Athletic 2

A first half hattrick from Dylan Edge helped secure the points and a gap of 5 at the top of the league for the Red Army in cold and wet conditions last night.

Downham got off to one of their trademark fast starts attacking the Wimbotsham End and Edge got the first goal from 20 yards out on 4 minutes. It was a good finish, but I feel like the Brantham keeper had his positioning wrong all the same.

The opening half an hour saw Downham continue to create chances, however it was Brantham who got back on level terms just after the half hour mark. Charlie Royle had had the beating of the Brantham defence for the most part was not able to beat the keeper and then when they broke they showed him how to finish by slotting the ball in the bottom corner for the equaliser. Brantham were buoyed by the goal and had a chance to go into the lead shortly after but a good save from Harry Sutton kept the score on level terms.

The visitors probably thought that half time was going to come sooner than it did, as they were caught napping twice in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Firstly, Dylan Kirk was upended in the box and Dylan Edge stepped up to take the penalty and get his and Downham's second. The keeper got a glove to it, but luckily the shot was too strong. A minute later and before the half time whistle, the Brantham full back made a hash of a clearance and Edge was there to pounce on it and extend Town's lead to 3-1.

Brantham must have got a rocket at half time, as they were the team that made the better start. That said, one feature that I have noticed regarding Downham is that a blistering first half with attacking play is often followed with a defensive second half that often leads to them getting the result, but nevertheless provides for some jittery moments. This game definitely followed that pattern.

However, the first real chance fell to Downham, who hit the post on 55 minutes, but after that it was Brantham who looked the most likely. After a shot wasn't dealt with and somehow Harry Sutton got away with it despite a loss of concentration, the visitors smelled blood. They did pull one back on 77 minutes and then bombarded the Downham defence. Fortunately the defence and more importantly Sutton who had shown some lacks in concentration earlier in the half kept them out and Downham hanged on for the win in a very entertaining match.
