Downham Town 1 Castle Acre Swifts 2

Last night Downham took on Castle Acre in the second round of the Norfolk Senior Cup. The banner behind where I was standing announced that Downham were the current holders of the cup and most of the talk around me was about how many Downham were going to win by. You could perhaps understand the confidence with Downham showing some good form especially, especially at home, in the Eastern Counties League Premier with Castle Acre having an average time 3 divisions below in Division 1 of the Anglia Combination. The confidence however was misplaced.

Downham started off the brighter of the two teams and had several chances. However, it was Castle Acre who hit them on the break after a period of concerted pressure to take the lead on 13 minutes. Castle Acre remained a danger with some quick counterattacks but Downham continued to pile on the pressure. They hit the woodwork twice and the keeper was forced into some fine saves. Downham did get the equaliser eventually in the last minute of the half when another fine strike - that was almost a carbon copy of the one he scored on Saturday - by Valtar Da Rocha found the back of the net.

It seemed like it was only a matter of time before Downham would get a second when the second half started, but another swift break by the, er... Swifts, saw Castle Acre regain the lead on 55 minutes. For the rest of the half Castle Acre were confined to hitting Downham on the break, and weren't without chances, but the majority of the half saw Downham continue to attack like the rain came down - torrentially. They hit the woodwork a couple of more times, but it wasn't to be and Castle Acre pulled off a shock result. Next up is another home game and it's a local Derby against a strong Dereham side, so Downham are really going to have to up their game for that.
