Peterborough United 2 Bristol Rovers 1
On Saturday we went to what was probably one of the lesser glamorous ties in the FA Cup Third Round, as Peterborough, who are struggling in the Championship took on League 2 Bristol Rovers, both teams had been hit by Covid outbreaks, so had missed quite a few games going into this one. for a number of reasons, this was my first trip to London Road since November 2019 when the Posh beat Burton in League 1. Recently, we have been following Cambridge more and ironically they had the glamour tie of Newcastle away, which they won 1-0.
Meanwhile at London Road, Peterborough were quick getting out of the blocks and Bristol Rovers also looked pretty determined. Neither team looked like they were particularly rusty. It did however take Peterborough a while to put together a proper attack and force a goal. Well, 20 minutes, but to be honest I had been expecting quite an easy win! Sammy Szmodics, who was on great form scored the opening goal and he was causing all sorts of problems alongside Sriki Dembele. However, the Posh didn't capitalise on their advantage and some clumsy defending allowed Rovers to equalise through a Paul Coutts penalty on 30 minutes and that was how it stayed until half time without either side looking like adding to the score.
The second half saw the introduction of Bali Mumba, who was making his Posh debut on loan from Norwich. He really gave Peterborough some fresh impetus and even though he is a defender he provided a lot of the through balls for Szmodics and Dembele and got involved himself. On 63 minutes he weaved his way through the Gas defence to slot home what was to be the winner.
The rest of the game was highly entertaining as Rovers pushed for an equaliser, but also left themselves exposed at the back. Neither team did score again in the end, but it was a good game and Posh will play QPR in the next round.
