Peterborough Sports 4 Concord Rangers 1 (preseason friendly 17/7/21)

I am hoping for a clear run at the season this time, as last season started off with some top trips out and a few new grounds, but even with this being the first trip out, it seems that that might be asking for a lot, so I am going to try and make the most of it while it lasts.

I had been to Peterborough Sports before, but that was when they were a Step 5 club and since then they have climbed up to the Southern Premier League. The quality is there to be seen too, as they made easy pickings of Concord Rangers who are in the league above in the National League South. They seem to be getting it right on the pitch, but there still needs a lot to be done off it. There used to be a really enjoyable social club, but that appears to have been bulldozed in order to make a new stand. I imagine that there will be a new social club eventually, but at the moment there is just a burger van selling warm cans of soft drinks, which on a day that reached around 30 degrees was a bit disappointing. If I'd have known you were allowed to bring cans in I would have done so.

The conditions were always going to make it a challenge for both teams and Concord aka 'the Beach Boys' probably wished that they had stayed on the beach. Sports got off to a blistering start and when Jayden  Randall scored on 15 minutes for the visitors it was against the run of play.

Pierre Ange Omombe was causing all sorts of problems for Concord on the left wing and when he put a hard low cross in on 40 minutes it caused chaos in the box and led to an own goal and a deserved equaliser for Sports.

At the start of the second half Sports carried on where they had left off and Michael Gash, who I have previously seen play for York, Cambridge United and Kings Lynn, looked like scoring on several occasions. The best chance fell to  Josh McGammon, who just before the hour mark thundered a shot in that hit the inside of the crossbar, but didn't fall over the line. On the hour mark  Dion Sembie -Ferris made it 2-1 with a header from close range.

At this point Concord subbed their goalkeeper, who had been their best player up to this point, but as they had brought 2 keepers for a friendly they probably felt that they had to play both of them. On 75 minutes a triallist scored for Sports to make it 3-1. The player in question looked like he could easily fit in at this level, but it appears that he was released by Cambridge United and also has offers from Kings Lynn and St. Neots, so it remains to see where he will be next season.

Lewis Hilliard rounded off the scoring on 80 minutes when the goalkeeper gave him the ball and he couldn't really miss.

All in all a good day out, good quality football and fantastic weather, just a shame about the lack of clubhouse.
