Another Ely win
It's not often that I get to write 'another Ely win' at the top of the post, although to be honest they made a hash of the Vase game at St.Ives on Saturday and lost 3-0, but I was at Villa and it wasn't the league.
On Tuesday night the Robins played Newmarket in a game that was previously a draw, but was replayed after Ely had been found to have an illegible player on the pitch, and ironically it was Ely who prospered with Newmarket now losing a point from the fixture and Ely gaining 2.
Ely started off brightly and had a number of the opening chances with Newmarket being hemmed in at the back, however we feared that Ely could be hit on the break and that is exactly what happened, and on 43 minutes after a very bright start for Ely, Stephen Bell made it 1-0 to Newmarket, which was another ironical twist and one that we predicted. He'd played for Ely up until recently and quite often for the reserves, he was a player I thought deserved more of a chance, he obviously did too as he adsconded to Newmarket. If it was any consilation at least the goal was a deflectio, but that's how it finished at half time 1-0 to Newmarket.
The second half got off to a better start though as on 47 minutes Robbie Mason made up for getting booked for swearing at the linesman (despite the ground being covered by signs saying to keep the bad language out of football) by scoring a superb ball that went into the top corner and gave the goalkeeper no chance.
It was to be a short lived victory though as Jamie Lane went down the other end straight from the kick off and levelled things up for the jockies.
Again Ely put the pressure on, but despite having 3 out and out attackers on the pitch in Impey, Mason and Fielding they never looked like scoring. However, in the end Newmarket must have felt that justice had to be done and obliged with an own goal on 76 minutes. It seemed to provide the catalyst Ely needed as 3 minutes later Scott Fielding scored a very nice goal to put Ely in the lead for the first time. What followed was a squeaky bum of a quarter of an hour, but in the end Ely ran out 3-2 winners.
